The Zambia Finals of the 2024 Chinese Bridge Competition Successfully Held

Co-hosted by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (ELEC) and the Chinese Embassy in Zambia, and undertaken by the Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia (UNZA), the Zambia Finals of the 23rd Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign University Students and the 17th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students were held on 7 June 2024. Mr. Wang Sheng, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy and Professor Mundia Muya, Vice-Chancellor of UNZA, attended the event and delivered speeches. More than 150 guests, including teachers and students from UNZA, representatives from Chinese teaching institutions and local Chinese community, were present.

Mr. Wang said that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Zambia. It is also the Year of Business Cooperation as well as the Year of Culture and Tourism, and the next session of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) will also be held. The Chinese language plays an important role in promoting people-to-people bonds and cultural exchanges and mutual learning. Mr. Wang encouraged the contestants to study the Chinese language and culture with enthusiasm, achieve personal development and further contribute to China-Zambia friendship and cooperation, with a view to jointly building a community of shared future for China, Zambia and Africa as a whole.

Professor Muya thanked China for its long-term strong support for Zambia-China educational cooperation and cultural exchanges, and said that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Zambia and China as well as the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Confucius Institute. It was of great significance to hold the Chinese Bridge Competition at the Confucius Institute at UNZA. The University of Zambia would continue to support Zambia-China friendship and people-to-people exchanges.

By delivering speeches, Q&A and talent shows on the themes of “One World, One Family” and “Fly High with Chinese”, 7 college students and 9 secondary school students told their stories of learning Chinese, expressed their love for the Chinese culture and understanding of China-Zambia friendship. Natasha Mfula from the University of Zambia and Celilia Chabu Mwewa from Crested Crane Secondary School won the first prizes in the competition for college students and secondary school students respectively.
